“Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: The Journey Begins” ……..one year on.

Good morning one and all.

As I’m sat gazing at the Atlantic Ocean from the window of my tent, it dawned on me that it has now been just over a year since I published “Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: The Journey Begins”. With that in mind, today I’m straying from my 60 Days Of Meat blog to quickly talk about the release of my first book.

I wrote “Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: The Journey Begins” in a time of great turmoil. Emotions were raw and I will still coming to terms with the consequences of what I had uncovered. It took me a long time to decide what to do with it, but eventually the decision was made to let it fly.

At first, it was worrying. Would it be read? What would readers reactions be? Would they like it? Would they hate it? Of course in my mind I always thought it would be the latter. But I can happily say that I was wrong, completely wrong.

Within a matter of days I was being sent messages, heartfelt messages from many people all over the globe. Reviews started to come in, most of them 5*, filled with words of encouragement and compliments. Needless to say, the decision to publish was not one I regret.

So these words that filled numerous blank pages, they became more than just words. They transformed into a story, they became a dream.

What’s more they became a tool to spread awareness of an illness. An illness with the power to take a life in the blink an eye. An illness that devastates families from generation to generation, yet mostly goes undetected until it’s too late because it’s rare and there is so little knowledge. There’s no cure, but there is a fight!

“This isn’t normally the kind of book I would read but having stumbled across it I gave it a go. I found it was great. It is written in a loose and informal style so that you feel you are simply sat with the author whilst he tells you his amazing story – being diagnosed with an ultra rare and life threatening disease. It gives an honest insight into how someone, like you or me, is forced to deal with an utterly terrifying situation and how they begin to re-frame their life after such devastating news. This book avoids sentimentality or provoking feelings of not wanting to read any further because its too much to deal with. You are made to feel at home by M J Smith as you follow him on his journey which is both humorous, honest and heartfelt. I hope that this book becomes widely read and begins to inform more people about little known syndromes like Vascular Ehlers-Danlos. Simply, you should read this and tell others about it.”

This was a book that I could not put down! I had expected a pretty dry, not very interesting, account of life..a boring time-line of living. How wrong I was. The narrative went back and forth, drawing the reader in to learn more. This was also an account of discovery, and consequences. The writer skilfully weaves his words so that you eagerly read more. Highly recommended!

I was drawn in and captivated immediately upon reading this book, which I have to say took me a bit by surprise being a fellow VEDSer which shows you just how powerful this book is and the insight that is bravely shown of the emotions and reality of what it feels like when receiving a diagnosis of such a chronic, life threatening condition that additionally few know about. Beautifully written, not a woe is me story, far from it in fact it had me laughing in parts and welling up in others. I found it unputadownable and didn’t want it to end! Highly recommended and not just to those with VEDS or those who know of VEDS but to anyone especially if wanting a good perspective on dealing with a life threatening condition. Well done to author MJ Smith, carpe diem.
